ARTIST STATEMENT
Aunia Marie Kahn | 1977

Self taught in the arts, I have been engaging in some form of art/expression since I can remember.

I claim my inspiration from pure emotions; powerful and oftentimes personal, ranging from love, anger, betrayal and the scores in-between. I feel honoring the human soul, spirit and determination wholeheartedly breathes life into my creations and my hope is that the images and expressions fuel the desire for life and walk a path of their own through each of my viewer's interpretations.

I feel that as I continue to evolve and explore the human spirit with flights and pursuits I gain new ground in my motivation to create my own world. I spend a majority of my time continuing my mostly self-taught artistic endeavors and maintaining and growing in skills, not only with my artist brush, but through my need to express my life and feelings though music, performance, design and writing.

BIOGRAPHY
Kahn’s mixed media works use the likeness of herself in movie like stills of elegant descendent, and varied taboo and often-controversial subject matter to often times challenge the viewer, yet connecting to interpersonal feeling and emotions felt across the board in today’s society. She builds characters, non-existent places, and dreams about them, executes them, and lets them breathe their own life in the visual world.

Aunia Kahn was born and raised in Detroit, MI, a natural creator as a child, she held onto her gift into her adulthood becoming an accomplished 21st Century artist. In 2005 she took the art scene by storm with her first exhibition and immediately gained interest in gallery showings across the United States, instantly invited to be publicized and interviewed nationally and internationally, and turned the heads of collectors and art lovers alike.

Her work has been seen in NY, MO, MD, MN, IL, TX, CA, VA, FL, DC, MA, MI, CO, OK, GA, TN, AZ, PA, OR, France and Canada and has been in close to 150 shows from 200-2008. Some of the places that have exhibited her work are San Diego Art Institute, Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, Mitchell Museum, The St. Louis Artists’ Guild, and Cpop Gallery.

Aunia has been featured and/or interviewed on FOX News LA, REFUSED Magazine, Celebrity Artist Michael Bell Radio Show, Juxtapoz on-line, Crawling Tunes Magazine (Germany), SNAP Magazine (UK), and Forbidden Whispers Magazine (UK). In 2007 Le Bourgeois Vineyards featured her work “Rousing the Whirlwind” on a collectors series of wine bottles.

Aunia now resides in Illinois where she spends her free time with her 4 German Sheppard dogs and 2 black cats in a little house on a hill.
